How & Why To Sell Diabetic Test Strips & Other Supplies

If you ever find yourself with extra, unused diabetic supplies, don’t throw them away.

Somewhere in the world, even in your own neighborhood, is a less fortunate and less privileged human being who desperately needs those supplies.

Yet due to their finances, living situations, or physical handicaps, they may be unable to obtain them for themselves.

You can choose to donate these items. Or, if you want to make a little cash for unused diabetic supplies, you can sell also them.

Is selling unused diabetic supplies a real thing?

Believe it or not, selling unused diabetic supplies is a real thing.

There are several reputable organizations around the globe that buy up your extra test strips, lancets, and CGMs, and sell them for a lower price to other, less fortunate diabetic patients who need them more than you do.

In developing countries such as Africa, Asia, and South America, where most of the population, diabetics often cannot afford to pay the high costs of glucose level testing equipment.

Even if they had the money, in some countries there simply aren’t many resources where one can buy these supplies. This is a stark contrast to the US and other first-world countries, where there is a drug store and clinic on every corner.

Moreover, many health professionals in these countries are less educated in diabetic health than doctors in the US. They may misdiagnose the symptoms of diabetes, and not realize the gravity of their patient’s precarious health condition – until it’s too late.

In the US, Great Britain, and other Western nations with access to more medical and financial resources, there are people who have easier access to diabetic supplies, yet struggle to afford them due to the astronomical prices of such products.

Not everyone qualifies for or can afford health insurance, and testing supplies are not cheap.

While we throw away our unused diabetic supplies, impoverished people in the US and abroad struggle to scrape up enough to allow them to survive. That’s why it’s vital to sell them instead of tossing them in the trash.

Why should I sell my unused diabetic supplies?

There are several great reasons to sell your diabetic testing strips, lancets, and CGMs.

1. You are getting back the money you spent

A 2020 study revealed that people with diabetes spend, on average, $2500 per year on supplies. Those are out-of-pocket expenses not covered by health insurance.

That’s a lot of money you will lose out on if you or someone in your family switches diabetic treatment methods.

Selling unused supplies makes economic sense. You need to recoup your losses so you can use that money for the new treatment you or your loved one changed to.

In addition, if someone you know has passed away and left unused testing equipment behind, you can use the extra money to help pay for a funeral or other miscellaneous expenses.

 2. The supplies you sell help people in need

While you are making extra cash from your unused diabetic supplies, you are also performing an act of charity. Those supplies will go to people in need, stateside and abroad, who can’t afford to pay full price for them from pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals.

3. You are putting less waste in landfills

Throwing away your diabetic supplies means you’re filling up landfills and contributing to environmental waste.

If you never opened them, then it is better for the planet if you sell them so that other people can use them.

What kinds of diabetic supplies can I sell?

Obviously, you should never try to sell diabetic supplies you’ve used before. Furthermore, you shouldn’t sell supplies that have been opened. They are now contaminated by the bacteria in the air and unsafe for use.

There are also certain supplies that are illegal to sell, such as those acquired through Medicare or Medicaid.

If they are still new in box or plastic, are in mint condition, and are unexpired, you can legally sell the following different kinds of diabetic testing equipment.

1. Testing strips

Diabetes testing strips are tiny pieces of plastic that you can insert into your blood glucose meter.

They are covered on one end with chemicals that soak up your blood. On the opposite side of the strip is a hair-thin layer of gold. The strip reads the glucose in the blood and processes it as an electrical signal.

This allows the meter to read the glucose level in the blood sample.

These strips are extremely important for diabetics because they may need to use several throughout the day. A person with Type 1 diabetes may need to use up to 10 strips a day.

As you can imagine, the cost of so many strips adds up quickly. A box of 100 can cost $100 or more.

If you have extra unused test strips, selling them is a terrific way to get some of the money you spent on them back. Those strips will be put to effective use for diabetics who have less money and resources to purchase these expensive supplies.

2. Lancets

Lancets are the needles diabetics use to prick their skin and draw out a drop of blood. This drop is essential for testing the glucose level in the blood.

The lancet is inserted into a lacing device. The needle can only be used one time unless the manufacturer states otherwise.

If you have leftover needles, they must be unopened and unused if you want to resell them.

Needles that have been exposed to the bacteria in the air are no longer sanitary. They could spread these bacteria into the blood and cause infection.

3. CGMs

A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is an electronic device.

The primary component is a sensor that sits partially under your skin. It analyzes your blood glucose levels and transmits them to the monitor, which may be part of your insulin pump system or located on a separate device.

The CGM works 24/7. However, you may need to replace the sensor every few days or weeks, depending on the CGM model you’re using. This will require you to keep a stock of sensors on hand.

If you ever switch to a different CGM model or quit using it altogether, you may have extra sensors that you don’t need anymore. In addition, you will also have a CGM device that is obsolete.

These supplies are expensive, but you can resell them if you no longer need them – providing they are unopened and unused.

Sell diabetic test strips

Where can I sell them?

When you decide to resell your diabetic testing supplies, you need to choose a reputable company that will 1) pay you a fair price and 2) sell the supplies at a lower price to people who can’t afford to purchase them at full cost.

The good news is at Diabetic Exchange USA, we do both. We make sure you get your money’s worth for your supplies, but we also turn around and help other diabetic patients get the supplies they need for less money.

But those aren’t the only reasons you should sell your diabetic supplies to us.

1. We are not trying to scam you

At Diabetic Exchange USA, we value honesty. One of the reasons we started this company was because we noticed a gap in the diabetic supplies market.

Other buyers of unused supplies were gouging their prices, which defeats the purpose of our mission. Our mission is to provide inexpensive diabetes test strips, lancets, and CGMs to people who can’t afford to buy into our expensive healthcare system.

We also want to encourage repeat buyers and sellers, which we can’t do if we’re trying to scam them every step of the way.

2. We are fulfilling a need in our community

In a recent study performed by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), researchers found that Americans diagnosed with diabetes will spend, on average, $16,752 per year on medical expenses.

That’s an astronomical amount. It’s as much as a small car, which most people must take out a 5 or 10-year loan to pay for it.

Although the United States is one of the most developed countries in the world, many of us still struggle to pay all our medical expenses.

The price gouging by pharmaceutical companies, medical suppliers, and resellers is out of control.

There is a need in our community for inexpensive diabetic testing supplies, but also a need for an ethical, legal way to dispose of those supplies which have gone unused.

At Diabetic Exchange USA, our mission is to fill that need. That’s why we offer you great prices for your unused test strips, lancets, and CGMs, so we can turn around and sell them at a lower cost to people in need.

3. Our process is simple and easy

The process we use to buy your diabetic supplies and pay you for them is simple and easy. It only involves 4 steps: check the price we offer for your supplies, sell them to us, ship them, and get paid. It’s as quick as that.

While other companies may give you the runaround, pay you a pittance, and not compensate you for months, we make things as streamlined and fast as possible – for your benefit as well as ours.

The sooner we can buy your supplies, the sooner we can sell them to other diabetics who need them.
